Chris Yukevich: My Parenting Compass : Create a Fulfilling Future for You and Your Children

My Parenting Compass : Create a Fulfilling Future for You and Your Children

Description

KIRKUS REVIEW: Yukevich's hands-on workbook prompts readers to discover their own answers to parenting questions. In her debut how-to book, the author doesn't aim to dispense parenting advice so that readers may raise perfect children. Instead, she describes her work as "a series of discovery exercises for parents to access their own beliefs, values, strengths and resourcefulness." The book offers eight practical "sessions" which can be completed in an hour or less, for busy parents at all stages of child-rearing. Each session contains four parts: theme (the author's thoughts and/or anecdotes on the topic), discovery (personal questions or activities for readers to ponder), action (action prompts for readers), and review (a summary of insights and actions). The succinct, easy-to-understand questions (such as, "What did you want to get done but didn't?") are applicable to real-life situations and repeated in weekly review sections. Yukevich's authorial voice is nonjudgmental and gentle as she directly addresses readers, and her exercises emphasize positives, such as one's parenting strengths. One upbeat writing prompt, for example, encourages parents to relive a "golden moment" that they spent with their children that week. However, Yukevich doesn't shrink from the tougher questions, such as, "On your death bed, what will you be glad you experienced and/or regret missing?" Some of the discovery activities include helpful visual aids. For instance, one instructs participants to label a diagram called a "Love Wheel" with words such as "time" and "calm"; the end result is a chart depicting areas in which one may need personal improvement. One should complete the sessions in order, writes Yukevich, as each one builds on the last, culminating in a one-page worksheet. Although this relatively slim workbook is designed to be used either alone or with partners, groups, or coaches, one could also use it in classrooms. The author provides spaces to write directly in the book, although more prolific writers may need an additional notebook. The author's common-sense reflections will help readers rediscover things they already know about parenting but may have forgotten during the hustle and bustle of life. A practical tool in which honest self-assessment is the key to success.

Solutions exist! Along the way, Rubin uses herself as a guinea pig, tests her theories on family and friends, and answers some of the most pressing questions - oddly, questions that other writers and researchers tend to ignore: - Why do I find it tough to create a habit for something I love to do? - I want to help someone else make a change. But how? - Why do practically all dieters gain the weight back - plus more? - How quickly can I change a habit? - Why can I make time for everyone else, but can't make time for myself? Whether you want to get more sleep, finish a project, maintain a healthy weight, or stop checking devices, habits make it possible.

Harold Shadick,Ch'iao Chien: A First Course in Literary Chinese

A First Course in Literary Chinese

Description

This book is intended to provide a foundation in the grammar of classical Chinese on which the student who plans to specialize in classical studies can build, and to give the student of modern Chinese sufficient knowledge of literary Chinese for his purposes. The material was developed over twenty years for use in the course "Introduction to Classical Chinese," as taught at Cornell University, where students of Chinese history and literature began their study of the literary language after one year of modern Chinese, and students in modern fields after two years. It is therefore assumed that the student can already pronounce Chinese words, use a system of romanization, read and write a few hundred Chinese characters, and understand simple passages of modern Chinese. The language studied in this book took shape in the latter half of the first millennium B.C. and persists as a living medium of expression today. Bernhard Karlgren has said of it: "All grammatical expedients which have been current at any time in the past, can be used promiscuously in the literature of later epochs." Texts 1-22 in Volume I constitute the core of the course. With the accompanying Exercises (also in Volume I), they provide material for about forty class sessions, thus leaving time in a normal academic year to take up a selection from Texts 23-34 and the Additional Texts A-N. (All are included in Volume I.) Most of the first twenty-two texts are from classical works of the formative period when the basic syntax was established. The remaining texts illustrate later grammatical forms and contain subject matter of considerable variety.

Bettina Bien Greaves is a former resident scholar, trustee, and longtime staff member of the Foundation for Economic Education. She has written and lectured extensively on topics of free market economics. Her articles have appeared in such journals as "Human Events, Reason, " and "The Freeman: Ideas on Liberty." A student of Mises, Greaves has become an expert on his work in particular and that of the Austrian School of economics in general. She has translated several Mises monographs, compiled an annotated bibliography of his work, and edited collections of papers by Mises and other members of the Austrian School. Way too young, eleven year old Tucker Creed and his six year old neighbor, Sylvie Bissenette, find they have something awful in common. Creed then decides he's going to do everything in his limited power to shield his Sylvie from her ordeal. So he does, A First Course in Literary Chinese download epub and Creed and Sylvie form a bond that grows and blossoms with their ages. They plot to leave their lives behind. The town they live in that will hold them down and the histories they share that, unless they break free, will bury them. Sylvie goes to their special place, Creed never shows and she doesn't see him again until it's too late. With Creed gone, Sylvie is forced to endure a nightmare and do the unspeakable to end it. To deal, she develops a hard shell with sharp edges that very few can break through. When Creed again finds his Sylvie, he discovers the girl he loved is locked away and he has to find his way back into her heart without getting shredded in the process.

The Tibetan Art of Dream Analysis

Description

Most of us tend to dismiss the importance of our dreams. Even if we sense a deeper meaning, we are generally unable to say what a dream symbolises or see its connection to the important aspects of our everyday life. The Tibetan Art of Dream Analysis reveals how for over a thousand years Tibetan dream masters have been able to see the deep link between the dream world and the waking one. Through them we understand why nightly dreams can give clear signs of health warnings, conflicts, or foretell events yet to happen such as death, a birth, or other harbingers of wealth and happiness. This book provides a useful list of dream symbols and their hidden meanings as well as case studies of easy to read analyses of dreams. Those interested in going beyond merely understanding what a dream might mean will find, within its pages, very detailed, step-by-step approaches as practised by dream yoga masters long ago. For the truly committed this book holds out the ultimate goal of spiritual enlightenment for someone prepared to undertake the rigorous journey of an adept dream yoga practitioner.

John Guy: Tudor England

Tudor England

Description

From Henry VII's capture of the crown at Bosworth in 1485 to the death of Elizabeth I in 1603, Tudor England witnessed far-reaching changes in politics and religion under Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth herself. John Guy's compelling new history is the most complete account of that momentous period to appear in over thirty years. Based on the most thorough knowledge of the sources and literature relating to the Tudors, his book is the first to take note of fresh debates on the progress of the English Reformation, and on the strengths and weaknesses of Tudor government at national and local level. Authoritative, comprehensive, clearly argued, and crisply written, the story is enriched by lively character studies of monarchs and politicians. The main themes of the period are closely analysed, and topics such as the economy and society, and political culture are placed firmly in their historical context, in individual chapters.

Another Side of Bob Dylan: A Personal History on the Road and Off the Tracks

Description

A "Los Angeles Times" Best seller!August 2014 marks 50 years since Bob Dylan released his fourth album, "Another Side of Bob Dylan." Recorded in one night, in the middle of a turbulent year in his life, the music marked a departure from Dylan's socially-conscious folk songs and began his evolution toward other directions. During the years they spent together, few people outside of Dylan's immediate family were closer than Victor Maymudes, who was Dylan's tour manager, personal friend, and travelling companion from the early days in 1960s Greenwich Village through the late 90's. "Another Side of Bob Dylan" recounts landmark events including Dylan's infamous motorcycle crash; meeting the Beatles on their first US tour; his marriage to Sara Lownds, his romances with Suze Rotolo, Joan Baez, and others; fellow travelers Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Wavy Gravy, Dennis Hopper, The Band, The Traveling Wilburys, and more; memorable concerts, and insights on Dylan's songwriting process. On January 26th, 2001, after recording more than 24 hours of taped memories in preparation for writing this book, Victor Maymudes suffered an aneurysm and died. His son Jacob has written the book, using the tapes to shape the story. The result is a vivid, first-hand account of Dylan as an artist, friend, and celebrity, illustrated with never-before-seen photographs, and told by an engaging raconteur who cut his own swathe through the turbulent counterculture.

This heavily illustrated book focuses on the events of the 1916 Easter Rising Another Side of Bob Dylan: A Personal History on the Road and Off the Tracks free pdf in Ireland, rather than the background and the consequences. In a widely expanded version of the supplement that appeared in The Irish Times in March to commemorate the 90th Anniversary, The 1916 Rising recreates the actual course of events during that tumultuous week, based on contemporary witnesses, memoirs and later recollections. It adds up to the most comprehensive and accessible account of Easter Week in print. While driving out of the American embassy in Moscow on the evening of February 16, 1978, the chief of the CIA s Moscow station heard a knock on his car window. A man on the curb handed him an envelope whose contents stunned U.S. intelligence: details of top-secret Soviet research and developments in military technology that were totally unknown to the United States. In the years that followed, the man, Adolf Tolkachev, an engineer in a Soviet military design bureau, used his high-level access to hand over tens of thousands of pages of technical secrets. His revelations allowed America to reshape its weapons systems to defeat Soviet radar on the ground and in the air, giving the United States near total superiority in the skies over Europe.

A War to be Won: Fighting the Second World War

Description

In the course of the 20th century, no war looms as profoundly transformative or as destructive as World War II. Its global scope and human toil reveal the true face of modern, industrialised warfare. Now, for the first time, we have a comprehensive, single-volume account of how and why this global conflict evolved as it did. This book is a history of the Second World War that tells the full story of battle on land, on sea, and in the air. The authors analyse the operations and tactics that defined the conduct of the war in both the European and Pacific theatres. Moving between the war room and the battlefield, we see how strategies were crafted and revised, and how the multitudes of combat troops struggled to discharge their orders. The authors present incisive portraits of the military leaders, on both sibs of the struggle, demonstrating the ambiguities they faced, the opportunities they took, and those they missed. Throughout, we see the relationship between the actual operations of the war and their political and moral implications. This book is the result of decades of research by two of America's premier military historians. It avoids a celebratory view of the war but preserves a profound respect for the problems the allies faced and overcame as well as a realistic assessment of the axis accomplishments and failures. This history of World War II - from the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 to the surrender of Japan in 1945, should be of interest to students, scholars, and general readers alike.

"The Grand Illusion" (TGI) synthesizes the paranormal with today's hard science, seeking to initiate a dramatic reempowering of humanity. You'll no longer consider yourself just a powerless little "meat computer" destined for total annihilation at life's biological end; that outmoded worldview is firmly buried by the material set out within. Here, new and expansive vistas of possibility are laid bare; the forces and energies produced by our consciousness that act on the world around us are blown open for your understanding. Did you know that modern neuroscience considers the brain as a "receiver" of consciousness rather than the "generator" of it? Get ready for an introduction to the mysterious "fifth force" known to science-a virtually unshieldable "carrier wave" of consciousness that can travel at speeds far exceeding light. With the knowledge that we are incredible and immortal spiritual beings temporarily inhabiting a dream-like, multidimensional, holographic reality, we can indeed begin to turn life on this planet-which, for many, is a virtual nightmare-into "The Grand Illusion." Are you ready to meet yourself? "A masterpiece. If "The Grand Illusion" were merely paradigm-destroying, which it certainly is for rearguard A War to be Won: Fighting the Second World War free ebook scientific 'Funda-materialists, ' it would be a satisfying read. Fortunately, for those of us dedicated to establishing a new civilization of consciousness, Brendan Murphy's fascinating, inspiring and seminal work also opens the door to a world of new creative possibilities. ... "The Grand Illusion" is mind-blowing." -Sol Luckman, author of "Potentiate Your DNA"
